Bat Active Season
Bat removal in Peachtree City and throughout Fayette County is one of the main pest problems we deal with during the warm months. Starting in mid March bats will become more active. They remain very active through September or October. When night time temperatures are around 52 degrees or higher bats will leave the security of their roost and take flight. Even in early spring and late fall, if the early evening temperatures are warm enough bats will come out in search of food. When night temperature drop below the low 50’s bats will return to their roosts for the remainder of the night. During the warm summer months bats will remain active all night and return to their roosts shortly before dawn.
Very often bats select our homes as safe places to roost and raise young. Bat maternal season runs from May 1st to August 15th. Bats are protected. Therefore, only under extenuating circumstances can they be removed if flightless young are preset. Bats love dark, secluded attics to set up camp in. It is amazing how bats find their way inside our attics. Bats only need 3/8th of an inch gap to gain access inside and there are a lot of gaps that size and bigger all over our rooflines that lead straight into our attics and eaves. Once bats have found a suitable place to roost (live) they will remain there or return there regularly.
Hazards With Bats
The biggest concern with bats living inside our attics is their droppings (guano) and urine. Bats constantly defecate (poop) while hanging in their roosts. They also defecate just prior to entering and leaving the entry point to their roosts. All this guano accumulates in areas and builds up in large amounts. Guano piles create ideal conditions for the fungal spores Histoplasma to grow. If people or pets breathe in too much of these spore it can cause severe lung infections know as Histoplasmosis. Like Pneumonia, Histoplasmosis can be very harmful. Histoplasmosis can be treated if it is properly diagnosed. With this hazard it is always advisable to have professionals perform any bat guano clean up.
The key to getting rid of bats is to first find exactly where their entry point is and then install a one-way valve over the entry hole. That’s generally the easy part. The more difficult part is to find and properly seal off all secondary entry points that they could move to once they are denied entry through their primary entrance. When bats attempt to re-enter through the primary entry point and can’t they will immediately start looking for another way in. When getting rid of bats we do not want to be relocating them from one point of your home to another.
